Universal Meshes for the Simulation of Brittle Fracture and Moving Boundary Problems

چکیده
Universal meshes have recently appeared in the literature as a computationally efficient and robust paradigm for the generation of conforming simplicial meshes for domains with evolving boundaries. The main idea behind a universal mesh is to immerse the moving boundary in a background mesh (the universal mesh), and to produce a mesh that conforms to the moving boundary at any given time by adjusting a few of elements of the background mesh. In this manuscript we present the application of universal meshes to the simulation of brittle fracturing. To this extent, we provide a high level description of a crack propagation algorithm and showcase its capabilities. Alongside universal meshes for the simulation of brittle fracture, we provide other examples for which universal meshes prove to be a powerful tool, namely fluid flow past moving obstacles. Lastly, we conclude the manuscript with some remarks on the current state of universal meshes and future directions. Dedicated to Michael Ortiz on the occasion of his 60th birthday.

A Fourth Order Formulation of DDM for Crack Analysis in Brittle Solids
A fourth order formulation of the displacement discontinuity method (DDM) is proposed for the crack analysis of brittle solids such as rocks, glasses, concretes and ceramics. A fourth order boundary collocation scheme is used for the discretization of each boundary element (the source element). In this approach, the source boundary element is divided into five sub-elements each recognized by a ...
متن کاملThermal Simulation of Solidification Process in Continuous Casting
In this study, a mathematical model is introduced to simulate the coupled heat transfer equation and Stefan condition occurring in moving boundary problems such as the solidification process in the continuous casting machines. In the continuous casting process, there exists a two-phase Stefan problem with moving boundary. The control-volume finite difference approach together with the boundary ...

In the present paper, applicability of the modified fixed grid finite element method in solution of three dimensional elasticity problems of functionally graded materials is investigated. In the non-boundary-fitted meshes, the elements are not conforming to the domain boundaries and the boundary nodes which are used in the traditional finite element method for the application of boundary condit...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Flow Past Oscillating Airfoil Using Oscillation of Flow Boundary Condition
The present study is devoted to an approximate modeling for numerical simulation of flows past oscillating airfoils. In this study, it is shown that the harmonic oscillating objects can be studied by simple numerical codes that are not able to solve moving grids. Instead of using moving grid for the simulation of flowfield around an oscillating airfoil, this unsteady flow is solved on a fixed g...
متن کاملA boundary element analysis of crack-propagation mechanism of micro-cracks in rock-like specimens under a uniform normal tension
In this work, the mechanism for fracture of brittle substances such as rocks under a uniform normal tension is considered. The oriented straight micro-cracks are mostly created in all the polycrystalline materials resulting from the stress concentrations. The present work focuses on the interactions of the pre-existing micro-cracks, which can grow and propagate within a rock-like specimen. The ...
